You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it

The meaning of that is you can try to help someone
 by giving good advice, but you can't force them to accept it or follow it. 

I like this proverb because your teacher can give you advice but at the end of the day it is up to the student to take the advice and put it into action.
